Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

The Clash Hammersmith Palais London 17th June 1980

In response to an email on another Clash related matter, our friend DomP sent over a remastered (with pitch correction) recording of the second night at the Hammersmith Palais from the band's '16 Tons Tour'. 31 songs for the sum of £3, that's not value for money.... only the Ramones would fit more songs into a single set (and they would do it in 40 minutes!).

Now, I never really bought much of the hype around The Clash, they did indeed record some great songs, but like any other normal band they also did some stuff that wasn't so great. It seems to me that Joe Strummer was effectively beatified by the UK music press and his band were untouchable. For me this attitude was somewhat to the detriment of other bands playing similar music within the wider related scene... 1979 and 1980 offered up such a variety of stunning new music but the spotlight was disproportionately focussed on The Clash.

Having said all that if I had've seen The Clash (I didn't), this is the kind of set that I would have wanted to see. If what I have said above gives the impression that I do not like The Clash, then that is misleading, I love The Clash (or at least most of The Clash's output). Most of my favourite material is in there from this Palais gig... 'Somebody Got Murdered', '(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais', 'What's My Name', 'Spanish Bombs', and so it goes...

Cheers Dom, much appreciated!
