Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

The Clash In The Long Wet Summer of '82

Well I mentioned The Clash in the preamble to a secong 1982 thread so it makes sense to do something on Joe and his Merry Men. Merry may be the wrong word to apply here. All folk can have bad year... just ask Andrew! For The Clash it was more something of an aestas horribilis for reasons that will become apaparent in this post.

It's April 1982 and The Clash are about to tour, no great surprise, it's what rock bands do.

Record Mirror (3rd April 1982)

New Musical Express (4th April 1982)

A new Studio was in the can ahead of the tour, called 'Combat Rock' it was to be the band's most successful album. All was looking rosey in Camp Clash....

Record Mirror (24th April 1982)

Until...

'Oi Mick, 'ave you seen Joe?'

New Musical Express (1st May 1982)

Record Mirror (1st May 1982)

''Ain't seen hide nor hair of the fucker Paul!'

New Musical Express (8th May 1982)

Record Mirror (8th May 1982)

Record Mirror (15th May 1982)

New Musical Express (15th May 1982)

Going, Going... Gone.

The tour that never was disappeared as the last three original dates were rescheduled. Know your comsumer rights as they say.

New Musical Express (22nd May 1982)

But wait! Things are looking up. Comandante Joe is located.

Record Mirror (22nd May 1982)

Better late than never... let's get this show on the road.... CLASH CITY ROCKERS! Hold on.... Topper?... Topper!!

Record Mirror (29th May 1982)

New Musical Express (29th May 1982)

And things go from bad to worse for the ex-drummer. Topper bang to rights!

Record Mirror (5th June 1982)

'Joe, have you still got Terry's number?'

Record Mirror (12th June 1982)

New Musical Express (12th June 1982)

So there you have it, the demise of The Clash's 'Know Your Rights' tour and the dissolution of the definitive line up with the departure of Topper Headon. After US dates, the resceduled UK dates were played throughout July and into August under the 'Down At The Casbah Club' banner.
