Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

Mitt Gamon and Ruts DC 'Whatever We Do' The Fleece Bristol 24th October 2015

Mitt Gamon on stage with Ruts DC
The Fleece, Bristol (24th October 2015)

Last week the digital version of Ruts DC's latest offering, the 'Bound In Blood' E.P. landed in my inbox, an advance warning of the imminent arrival of the 10" on the doorstep. Track 2 is entitled 'Born Innocent - Mitt's Immortal Mix' The Mitt of the mix was the late master of the harp, Mitt Gamon.

This reminded me of an afternoon spent in Bristol some eleven years ago now (24th October 2015). Gunta and I were invited into the band's sound check ahead of the gig at the Fleece. Sat down on a bench in the venue whilst Ruffy sorted his drums out, a rather hirsute chap came and sat down on the same bench and introductions were made. Now I did not know that Mitt (for it was he) had previously played with Ruts DC as he started waxing lyrical about harmonicas. Throughout our chat in observed that he was very protective of a mid-size case that he had by his feet... shades of Dave Greenfield I thought! It was at this point that I asked him whether he carried a harmonica with him. 'I do better than that!' he retorted reaching for the case. Upon opening this mysterious case I was presented with orderly racks of the things! Must have been about 20 or more in there!

Later in the middle of the gig Mitt was invited up and taking centre stage he revisited his harmonica contribution to the band's 'Whatever We Do' 30 or more years on from the recording 'Rhythm Collision Volume 1.

Sadly, Mitt died in 2022, but it was a pleasure to meet him on that day in Bristol and see him perform that much missed song from the Ruts DC set.
