Aural Sculptors - The Stranglers Live 1976 to the Present

Welcome to Aural Sculptors, a blog aimed at bringing the music of The Stranglers to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst all of the various members of the band that have passed through the ranks since 1974 are accomplished studio musicians, it is on stage where the band have for me had their biggest impact.

As a collector of their live recordings for many years I want to share some of the better quality material with other fans. By selecting the higher quality recordings I hope to present The Stranglers in the best possible light for the benefit of those less familiar with their material than the hardcore fan.

Needless to say, this site will steer well clear of any officially released material. As well as live gigs, I will post demos, radio interviews and anything else that I feel may be of interest.

In addition, occasionally I will post material by other bands, related or otherwise, that mean a lot to me.

Your comments and/or contributions are most welcome. Please email me at adrianandrews@myyahoo.com.

X Ray Spex New Regent Brighton 17th March 1978

UPDATE: It has been pointed out that the date of this gig as indicated on the earlier artwork is incorrect stating 17th March 1978 whereas the gig actually took place on 17th February. A quick check of the 18th February '78 issue of the NME confirms this. It also suggests that support came from Dead Fingers Talk rather than The Piranhas.

Following on from a remarkable night in Brixton celebrating the music of X Ray Spex, I'm now travelling down the A23/M23 to Brighton. Add in an element of time travel as well and we arrive in West Street in the centre of Brighton, just up from the seafront. It's 17th March February 1978. I would have loved to have been there, but the reality is whilst I am just 10 miles up the road in Burgess Hill, I am three days away from my 9th birthday (if I remember rightly on that occasion I got a Stoke City home kit!) and punk is not to be on my horizon for a few years yet!

Here are X Ray Spex at their height, supported by one of Brighton's finest bands, The Piranhas, themselves a couple of years prior to coming into the national consciousness. The quality is a bit rough, but this audience recording I think brings with is something of the atmosphere of punk gigs at that time.
