Just received this from a contributor to the site, many thanks! This is a pretty good sounding recording of a great set from The Damned at quite a famous gig. I awful, freezing cold whether the majority of bands that formed what was to become known as the UK 82 punk scene gathered under the roof of the Queen's Hall in Leeds for an early punk all-dayer. True there were a few of the old hands there too, Chelsea, the UK Subs and The Damned of course and a handful of yanks in the form of Black Flag.

Hi Adrian I was there what a day remember the train from Birmingham was freezing cold. Inside the hall there was stalls selling teeshirts & bootleg cassettes. As for the to some bands I have never seen since.

I was there. Coached in from Manchester. Snow outside filled your docs, then they thawed inside and half the floor was a big puddle. Nowhere to sit cos of it. Queens Hall? It seemed like a warehouse to me. Skins were barred cos of a lot of aggro at gigs so some were wearing punk mates leather jackets. 1st time seen Chelsea & Black Flag both were brilliant. Flag got lot of abuse cos the drummer wore a massive cowboy hat. First time I"ve ever seen anything live from this all-dayer. Hopefully more will surface.

I was there that day. Up ft dudley on the coach . But I thought The Damned came on straight into wait for the blackout

ReplyDeleteI was there too. Got a coach up from London that broke down half way! As someone else said yes it wet and cold like a disused concrete floored warehouse. Had a good time though atmosphere was electric but safe too didn't see trouble we were there for the bands.
ReplyDeleteI was there with my 2 mates - we were 15 at the time and got the coach from London - 7 coachloads of punks from Victoria - it was mental. Although The Damned headlined, The Exploited stole the show - they were magnificent. And tickets were £4.50!!
ReplyDeleteCame up on the train from Leicester,all the punks from Leicester tried to Kip in the train station,bloody freezing and they wouldn’t put the heating on!
ReplyDeleteMe and a mate got a coach up from Brum aged 15. Great to see all those bands together. Bow Wow Wow didn't turn up, the floor was flooded, food was awful and it very cold outside.

I saw them 25 years later in Brisbane, Australia, still Amazing.
Can someone answer my Question was Billy Idol at this gig, in my mind I feel like he was.
Loved the Damned, I still have my Tickets framed on my wall in Australia.
