As part of the TFTLTYTD thread, this one is for the former Blockheads drummer Charlie Charles to lost his fight with cancer not so long after this series of benefit gigs. However, the ring master of the Blockheads circus, Ian himself, lost his own fight with cancer five years later in 2000.</p><p>I was fortunate enough to see The Blockheads with Ian on three occasions. In 1994 Madness played Madstock II in Finsbury Park with Ian (a well acknowledged influence for the band) in support. At around the same time the band headlined at the Grand in Clapham, this time with The Nutty Boys (Lee and Chrissy Boy from Madness) doing the support honours. Lastly, I saw one of the band's last gigs at the Junction in Cambridge. That must have been in 1999, Ian was unwell by this stage but it was magical seeing such an icon in such a small venue. </p><p>My first encounter with Ian and his Blockheads was when 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick' came out.... late 1978. I remember going to a schoolfriend's house specifically to record the single. This meant kneeling in front of his parent's radiogram with the small plastic microphone pointed at one speaker whilst trying to be as quiet as possible! The B-side, 'There Ain't Half Been Some Clever Bastards' was wonderfully subversive in my 9 year old mind!</p><p>Dury was a fantastic lyricist whose wayward appearance and cockney delivery meant that he still found a receptive audience after punk swept the pub rock bands aside (of course not overlooking the fact that Kilburn & The High Roads were the inspiration for many of the young punks that dominated 1977).</p><p>By all accounts Ian wasn't the easiest of personalities, but that not withstanding his and The Blockheads legacy is second to none.</p><p>FLAC: <a href="https://we.tl/t-dICXFvyWK2">https://we.tl/t-dICXFvyWK2</a></p><p>Artwork: <a href="https://we.tl/t-sdbmYB3dUK">https://we.tl/t-sdbmYB3dUK</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguFisqqpKnZhBXDVoWpm9QpuiB88rl2eyDcejHPeTRvw3CmnQHI_o2u1NRy-eyQTULNPl_CC7Y5GYGCzOKSoBQrs-4qs-eNUTMtgYXA2Eap02_ELeYxwmBZdibyOP2TR_a1z2H257OIL8wAQfDdG4heDI4CNwlApWQ8ayGfFfvcgqxHX8M1ir840vnmQxr/s709/DURY%20REAR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="709" data-original-width="709" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguFisqqpKnZhBXDVoWpm9QpuiB88rl2eyDcejHPeTRvw3CmnQHI_o2u1NRy-eyQTULNPl_CC7Y5GYGCzOKSoBQrs-4qs-eNUTMtgYXA2Eap02_ELeYxwmBZdibyOP2TR_a1z2H257OIL8wAQfDdG4heDI4CNwlApWQ8ayGfFfvcgqxHX8M1ir840vnmQxr/w400-h400/DURY%20REAR.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p> <p></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><p><br /></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-21972710732332846642024-03-16T10:23:00.001+00:002024-03-16T10:23:07.174+00:00O2 Academy Birmingham 16th March 2013<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggWPCWdNnJEf8SgoX49KTw8QytUFjU3dpQsjewzGrB8sDBVp_eisVZsAnJtopw9hUU7TNbaZv2GjSbaZALLajAhNuGUv-xdKWDF-khnaC4WTTdIwGgoqO6SJa8usLAbWzP8uodt_WCn934LgvsP9H44q4LfhceHSJRhTQ4u5RMATMZHll0n5mTllVOSBMl/s720/BIRMINGHAMFRONTPOST.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="719" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggWPCWdNnJEf8SgoX49KTw8QytUFjU3dpQsjewzGrB8sDBVp_eisVZsAnJtopw9hUU7TNbaZv2GjSbaZALLajAhNuGUv-xdKWDF-khnaC4WTTdIwGgoqO6SJa8usLAbWzP8uodt_WCn934LgvsP9H44q4LfhceHSJRhTQ4u5RMATMZHll0n5mTllVOSBMl/w400-h400/BIRMINGHAMFRONTPOST.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>As the Stranglers touring machine rolls into the West Midlands today for tonight's gig in Wolverhampton, here is a birthday gig from this day in 2013, Baz's 500th gig with the band.... Gunta wanted some haberdashery and it was convenient for me that the shop was next to a pub. With a justification of 'I don't want to rush you so I'll have a quick pint' or some such nonsense, I disappeared through the swing door of Gullivers. As an aside, Mo informed me that the pub was one of Mark E. Smith's locals (I suspect that there were a fair few of those!) and The Fall's track 'The Mixer' was written about a guy who worked behind the bar in there. Any way, I digress. I could not help noticing this brilliant mosaic on the wall. It had not been on the wall when I last called into this pub. Since it was a Wednesday and just past opening at that, I was the sole customer, so I was able to occupy the booth opposite and study it well. It was a memorial piece to Steve Shy, original Manchester punk and creator of the fanzine 'Shytalk', one of the earlier cut, pasted and xeroxed DIY efforts that informed local kids about the new music both on a national level and local level. The piece is accompanied by a quite from Pete Shelley who described Shy as the 'Unsung hero of the early Manchester scene'.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTUM7rpV-9jRM8x2VHflg-M7AWM_K6DMJguuZB0SyC1ZPEHrQsXSYsxpwTuex2i-FqBq3B1C5CyRbLrp03VrGcb6YuJ8-ikjd4UWhr9BzhBoONZTTdn9UCbfUbkGxzed1MQjsI43dmVm_SpaC94Ne_XEnkVrgL1vN1E4bIWA9Ix90NpAVQtOnAu_rEE9vr/s777/shytalk777.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="437" data-original-width="777" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTUM7rpV-9jRM8x2VHflg-M7AWM_K6DMJguuZB0SyC1ZPEHrQsXSYsxpwTuex2i-FqBq3B1C5CyRbLrp03VrGcb6YuJ8-ikjd4UWhr9BzhBoONZTTdn9UCbfUbkGxzed1MQjsI43dmVm_SpaC94Ne_XEnkVrgL1vN1E4bIWA9Ix90NpAVQtOnAu_rEE9vr/w400-h225/shytalk777.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>From a Man United fan blog site, Steve recalls an encounter with an irate Hugh Cornwell: </p><p><i>'One of the editions of Shy Talk had a piece in it which was slagging The Stranglers off. I had the mag on sale at the Electric Circus when they next played there in June 1977 and Stranglers lead singer, Hugh Cornwell, bought a copy off me. Half an hour later, he was all over the place looking for me and wanting a fight after reading what had been written. The following night, The Drones were supporting The Stranglers in Sheffield and Cornwell saw me and came walking over. I thought, “here we go”, but he just said “sorry about that last night. It annoyed me. I thought we were all supposed to be on the same side”. I said “maybe, but you’re not on the same side as the lad who wrote that fucking piece”'.</i></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-85712702960690927552024-03-10T09:52:00.009+00:002024-03-10T09:52:55.678+00:00A Small Square of The Square.<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj9I1DA1CkVw8gKf8nMR_YEaARCKOvoIp88p83OfXaHTV6h8YChQiJHW9iwLsdRyNDhWy58RepUaNccWU4o0z0XSyxMLlWQaKwlK_jTdcGFHauiyDPexp09tqE_mVq31fVpXz97S98A5vQaX1QqEnDcmrjZMLVWnwAhRgvDQcWM9otyse510cvkXvnIPS5/s1024/4cad5ccd-77d9-428d-afaa-367622d89a26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1024" data-original-width="768" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj9I1DA1CkVw8gKf8nMR_YEaARCKOvoIp88p83OfXaHTV6h8YChQiJHW9iwLsdRyNDhWy58RepUaNccWU4o0z0XSyxMLlWQaKwlK_jTdcGFHauiyDPexp09tqE_mVq31fVpXz97S98A5vQaX1QqEnDcmrjZMLVWnwAhRgvDQcWM9otyse510cvkXvnIPS5/w480-h640/4cad5ccd-77d9-428d-afaa-367622d89a26.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>This morning Gunta and I paid a visit to Harlow museum that also takes in the walled garden. The garden is a great secluded and peaceful space amidst the persistent traffic of Harlow (could it be that on the cusp of being closer to 60 than 50 I have become mellow... oh no!). The exhibition space traces the development of the area from from the Bronze Age, through the Roman period up to the modern day and Frederick Gibberd's new town vision.</p><p>For me the pinnacle of the town's development was The Square, simply the bestest, independent music venue that there ever was. Why the decision was made to close the venue only for the land to be undeveloped for such a long time is a mystery to me. On the face of it Harlow and its residents were needlessly deprived of a brilliant entertainment hub for years.</p><p>So back to 2024 and the museum then. The original backdrop is an exhibit and boxed up sections of The Square's stage were available to buy... well I had to! Boxed as it is I was reminded of the presentation of posh cakes and pastries. However, open the box and I can assure you you would not put the contents anywhere near your mouth. It is a 10 x 10 cm slice of stage, the rubber surface of which is a rich infusion of gob, sweat and gaffer tape adhesive... in short all the flavours of rock 'n' roll condensed in a CD sized block. OK, so it is not a piece of Wardour Street Marquee, but nevertheless within it is a small part of my musical journey, but more importantly the history of the bands that put Harlow on the map and those bands that went on to much bigger things.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnk_SnJTqjgUHv3iAwAvIQaag2s4hQD3MqNQGEQh8CatKnY3wO5lQkSqtXKqBUf7QYkMVFlmWVNp_F5hW1_QeM4nuWwIY4GGTP6Zy8ag5XPMROHcuzJPGGzrQoAAikvKfLm-uhpOtEqFHFkqiYzm-BxhVRL77rxbOV2t1Oz80BOmBx6bRwBsVLs3BhpmER/s1560/430302018_1785045945309771_4559966439307003332_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1560" data-original-width="1170" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnk_SnJTqjgUHv3iAwAvIQaag2s4hQD3MqNQGEQh8CatKnY3wO5lQkSqtXKqBUf7QYkMVFlmWVNp_F5hW1_QeM4nuWwIY4GGTP6Zy8ag5XPMROHcuzJPGGzrQoAAikvKfLm-uhpOtEqFHFkqiYzm-BxhVRL77rxbOV2t1Oz80BOmBx6bRwBsVLs3BhpmER/w300-h400/430302018_1785045945309771_4559966439307003332_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOn2JNfSgzgZmPA1hETiKWkHV5abtrHxhWBfnzAOIJVxES3ZdydG4W1TbNnQbrldAf2LiRfj9G_JXMOGpTvdOCZ-P1X-7SDcI1wiy0tivmY4Qla3PiJa8jU78nIwLHtAnfVfAcD0UXfKFGd2Mdfvw09I_9loP0_xwv4Qqpbv43z-GgR8Lf4_dscF2RJju/s1560/430434069_455276570163209_98525913049842455_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1560" data-original-width="1170" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPOn2JNfSgzgZmPA1hETiKWkHV5abtrHxhWBfnzAOIJVxES3ZdydG4W1TbNnQbrldAf2LiRfj9G_JXMOGpTvdOCZ-P1X-7SDcI1wiy0tivmY4Qla3PiJa8jU78nIwLHtAnfVfAcD0UXfKFGd2Mdfvw09I_9loP0_xwv4Qqpbv43z-GgR8Lf4_dscF2RJju/w300-h400/430434069_455276570163209_98525913049842455_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><p>Also, whilst sifting through a mass of gig tickets and flyers I came across a Square beermat... could be worth a fortune!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh1VjXy-ZENA46WhYiH3QHwh2-jr0Ja04NksOKKUOVq0bsZs9PXG36aYu31KLpc61XOM9f8H4UTLZXQe_nxGVZy6cLcA5Or73vUBsnvG24PVxAh_koQZRga7s0pxs81kwkzTB4k1fRTNw1Dhc0YuOQ9Z7nFPqQkumeZCBCojAcieGI_sAtAKFvEjoPmPBv/s1560/430690802_927794718730500_2271404576192554952_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1560" data-original-width="1170" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh1VjXy-ZENA46WhYiH3QHwh2-jr0Ja04NksOKKUOVq0bsZs9PXG36aYu31KLpc61XOM9f8H4UTLZXQe_nxGVZy6cLcA5Or73vUBsnvG24PVxAh_koQZRga7s0pxs81kwkzTB4k1fRTNw1Dhc0YuOQ9Z7nFPqQkumeZCBCojAcieGI_sAtAKFvEjoPmPBv/w300-h400/430690802_927794718730500_2271404576192554952_n.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-42915236290395025822024-03-10T09:43:00.001+00:002024-03-10T09:43:07.062+00:00The Undertones Sin of Pride Tour 1983<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEFz-ELGSBDJ-0lvbvTuve2Wo_55633SAPpk1wXqChmR7k_gUYzk3hVrTsKGF2kpkrQtAKZJlZX54EPuCvJLic39J1Dg1nzFmxXdeYKpre7NkyrvEjQ_BzH-kbdogqA0aQFgtO8FqthPmuilu8hY7re2PCq58BfKRRJWnUJp6LzmAz38dMGyjM3wxIJVwP/s1628/FR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1628" data-original-width="1627" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEFz-ELGSBDJ-0lvbvTuve2Wo_55633SAPpk1wXqChmR7k_gUYzk3hVrTsKGF2kpkrQtAKZJlZX54EPuCvJLic39J1Dg1nzFmxXdeYKpre7NkyrvEjQ_BzH-kbdogqA0aQFgtO8FqthPmuilu8hY7re2PCq58BfKRRJWnUJp6LzmAz38dMGyjM3wxIJVwP/w400-h400/FR.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div>The box room from where I work for half of the week doubles up as a king of pastime space out of office hours. The space is small and usually looks like a radio station studio after a tropical storm has passed through. One problem is discs, CD's and DVDs. I have 100s that are half labelled or not labelled at all. I know that in this respect I am a little behind the times as such physical storage of data is on its way out but still. <br /><br />Last weekend, I was trying to sort through some of these and bring a bit of order to the chaos. One had a post-it note on it that simply said 'Undertones 83'. I have listened to it and identified all of the tracks and I have to say I really like it. I am guilty of selectivity when it comes to The Undertones in that I haven't really ventured beyond the first two albums and the singles. I don't even own either 'Positive Touch' or 'The Sin Of Pride'. This recording is late career, coming from somewhere on 'The Sin of Pride' tour. A bit of on-line digging indicates that this would be one of the last gigs that the band played with Fergal since they played the live rarity 'I Ain't Got Nobody', a song by 'Sly and the Family Stone'. It is a full set recording for which I cannot pin down the date or the venue, so if anyone has any ideas...<br /><br />The sound is rather changed from the new wave of The Undertones' and 'Hypnotised' The writing is more complex... there are still songs about girls but fewer on the subject of chocolate!<br /><br />I have promised myself to give some listening time in the coming days to those last two Fergal period studio albums.<br /><br />FLAC: <a href="https://we.tl/t-kUxYNcDI4y">https://we.tl/t-kUxYNcDI4y</a><br /><br />Artwork: <a href="https://we.tl/t-5Dq25r9zVe">https://we.tl/t-5Dq25r9zVe</a><br /><br /><div><div>01. Since all of my Baz era Glasgow gigs have already been posted to the site Aberdeen will serve as a good substitute. It was a great tour in bitter weather (see picture <a href="https://auralsculptors.blogspot.com/2015/04/on-march-2015.html">here</a>). The set was great with 'Longships' preceding 'The Raven' and a vocal work out for our Dave in the form of 'Four Horsemen'. With the assistance of the Beach Ballroom' sprung floor, on this night the joint was indeed jumping!<br /><br />To all in Scotland this weekend have a fine time indeed!<br /><br />FLAC: <a href="https://we.tl/t-2fvqarFSx5">https://we.tl/t-2fvqarFSx5</a><br /><br />Artwork: <a href="https://we.tl/t-RD1lZR3wyt">https://we.tl/t-RD1lZR3wyt</a><div><br />01. However on the night it transpired that as a result of illness in The Primatives' camp, support duties would be proffered by EXTC. This was fine for me as I know far more XTC songs than I do The Primatives, and to be honest I have a real soft spot for the most quintessentially English of English bands. Only TC on the kit remains these days, but it was a great set and the closest that I am ever gonna get now to seeing XTC as was.</p><p>Thanks to Chatts for the share, appreciated as always.</p><p>FLAC: <a href="https://we.tl/t-QE6yJxf31M">https://we.tl/t-QE6yJxf31M</a></p><p>Artwork: <a href="https://we.tl/t-S5LGsF70B0">https://we.tl/t-S5LGsF70B0</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9yZO9HXoX_T30f-2vM7lRQN9z05y0rxPJcUStrAnNOsl1M5YzHQf7_zjBHf3GUkriV-4Jl8BN570m5o8Q7udUAyjYCx_XnjO94nQRwu-KXJ3EsLKgdqM1tUafXoP7aLdtzf3KY6-vM-uM-qD_cjBUHRZdV0tBjQMz-2qk5Zm9gOXDEm954XpKR4eBNbdD/s709/extc%20london%20250124%20bk.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="709" data-original-width="709" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9yZO9HXoX_T30f-2vM7lRQN9z05y0rxPJcUStrAnNOsl1M5YzHQf7_zjBHf3GUkriV-4Jl8BN570m5o8Q7udUAyjYCx_XnjO94nQRwu-KXJ3EsLKgdqM1tUafXoP7aLdtzf3KY6-vM-uM-qD_cjBUHRZdV0tBjQMz-2qk5Zm9gOXDEm954XpKR4eBNbdD/w400-h400/extc%20london%20250124%20bk.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-82721685148526589502024-03-01T23:00:00.003+00:002024-03-01T23:00:45.071+00:00Hugh Cornwell Islington Assembly Hall 25th January 2024<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCvJQJQGCys7kAdlRRwevczVxXat9wxtR1ZIF5NI3bjg-lut0biTLqwiww8yJStig7tfGqkxyiaKqR87pS6GLEyt3db6LxDFcPJZA1c93jz7AhyphenhyphenldH18aYFnDgEHxJgHJfABAxXt3ZZ7BLeXwj5XEBhN32doYS03A8V6PmS3ZTLXVuuXZniYp16k-14yaX/s2681/Islington%20Assembly%20Hall%2025012024%20fr.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2681" data-original-width="2681" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCvJQJQGCys7kAdlRRwevczVxXat9wxtR1ZIF5NI3bjg-lut0biTLqwiww8yJStig7tfGqkxyiaKqR87pS6GLEyt3db6LxDFcPJZA1c93jz7AhyphenhyphenldH18aYFnDgEHxJgHJfABAxXt3ZZ7BLeXwj5XEBhN32doYS03A8V6PmS3ZTLXVuuXZniYp16k-14yaX/w400-h400/Islington%20Assembly%20Hall%2025012024%20fr.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><p></p><p>Hugh was on good form on this night putting in a long set in North London. Three nights of following the band in The Netherlands and Belgium. At the time, the acoustic thing was new to me and I thought it worked very well. It also meant a change to see the band in some smaller, even more intimate venues. This was the occasion that brought me to Turnhout for the first time, On that occasion, I was totally ignorant of the fact that 67 years earlier my Grandfather had been here and that every September his regiment (the 11th Royal Scots Fusiliers) were and are commemorated as liberators of the town. In more recent years I have laid wreaths in the CWGC section of the municipal cemetery. But on this occasion it was all fast food and drinking!</p><p>Here we have a nicely edited record of these shows. Apologies as I received this in a trade many years ago I cannot remember who was responsible for the authoring.</p><p>DVD image: <a href="https://we.tl/t-LfXfKQWznH">https://we.tl/t-LfXfKQWznH</a></p><p>Artwork: <a href="https://we.tl/t-gC4YauTjsd">https://we.tl/t-gC4YauTjsd</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJNlmvahz-B3v0rYWPuOIgH2kvNN7U9ITK0rsMAByhSw9RFsEpe84kGrz3lYs-giJqhQedT3JQ9bpHjnYzoE9K1x-xZTi8m_azUwUXGpsRiXP3sxj17qf-hrE6wHbyxIf9l7evL7SHcDqBDvbBE4y9f4BwevIVYFv7FlCjv9j4FiFfn-ARruWO_Iohy0qV/s1435/LOWLANDS%20ACOUSTIC%20TOUR%20APRIL%202011%20rear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1435" data-original-width="1428" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJNlmvahz-B3v0rYWPuOIgH2kvNN7U9ITK0rsMAByhSw9RFsEpe84kGrz3lYs-giJqhQedT3JQ9bpHjnYzoE9K1x-xZTi8m_azUwUXGpsRiXP3sxj17qf-hrE6wHbyxIf9l7evL7SHcDqBDvbBE4y9f4BwevIVYFv7FlCjv9j4FiFfn-ARruWO_Iohy0qV/w398-h400/LOWLANDS%20ACOUSTIC%20TOUR%20APRIL%202011%20rear.jpg" width="398" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-15139805790426901302024-02-19T22:06:00.003+00:002024-02-19T22:13:09.694+00:00NME 24th to 31st December 1977<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv9KX4wAhN1FwB2GZoIB-qYJq7KIavDQWqnEFQJeWo28FAJQCFvmLgdHtzjaA55ihzsVO07oxVmdcIj4k2gP0K9p7kerzWGLTFiDjAbLon7iZRziGWzZ1jDL2dqnHjQ4rIz196RnlQ5XP-9IUcRHtajpV4ZuCJNw0meyA3_iPcrJK5Nm_CHpacQazQzt05/s546/NME%20DEC%2077.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="546" data-original-width="380" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv9KX4wAhN1FwB2GZoIB-qYJq7KIavDQWqnEFQJeWo28FAJQCFvmLgdHtzjaA55ihzsVO07oxVmdcIj4k2gP0K9p7kerzWGLTFiDjAbLon7iZRziGWzZ1jDL2dqnHjQ4rIz196RnlQ5XP-9IUcRHtajpV4ZuCJNw0meyA3_iPcrJK5Nm_CHpacQazQzt05/w446-h640/NME%20DEC%2077.jpg" width="446" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>I am not sure whether visitors to this site will be interested in uploads of certain issues of the music press or not, even more to the point whether people are keen to see images of the gallic one's bare arse!</p><p>For my part I love to peruse old issues of the UK music weeklies that back in the day served as indicators on what we would spend our money on and how we would use our social lives! I have on many occasions (OK it is maybe a bit of a bloke thing to do... akin to making lists!) turned to the gig listings, picked a day in order to decide in whose company I would have spent that particular evening. </p><p>What these old issues also provide is band histories as they happened. Snapshots of long careers. Given the very high price that the original papers (yellow papers as Gunta calls them) command online it is a shame that more are not digitised and put out there.</p><p>This was the infamous issue that featured our bass player as 'Stud Of The Year'. What is clear from this issue was that 1977 was unquestioningly the year of punk. The 'King of Rock 'n' Roll is dead 'Long live King Punk Rock!'. </p><p>If anyone on here has old issues of NME, Sounds or Melody Maker etc scanned and would be happy to share please get in touch/</p><p>PDF: <a href="https://we.tl/t-VSOaLVsrCu">https://we.tl/t-VSOaLVsrCu</a></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-20090271362180976922024-02-19T20:26:00.001+00:002024-02-19T22:50:18.358+00:00Ombudsmen The Lexington London 18th February 2024<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRc-MKUyhRP81ykkt0V1VF-rDpCOYAdVHc0SOuHedu3s2zqugL83WMSGsVWJiBJYkYP0J4VsmcIAcbv_txinYRKXP4gcgzfR0LKIOWaapF10X7EQD9i3eY1AlEyMdgifB_lABFEwSIa5Sd1GL7IIEYaR8N0BeB7XwFijw4eF9xtUjgvxln75C1PwEfbqPo/s1754/424621341_1613742022769130_5939596725740449689_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1754" data-original-width="1240" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRc-MKUyhRP81ykkt0V1VF-rDpCOYAdVHc0SOuHedu3s2zqugL83WMSGsVWJiBJYkYP0J4VsmcIAcbv_txinYRKXP4gcgzfR0LKIOWaapF10X7EQD9i3eY1AlEyMdgifB_lABFEwSIa5Sd1GL7IIEYaR8N0BeB7XwFijw4eF9xtUjgvxln75C1PwEfbqPo/w452-h640/424621341_1613742022769130_5939596725740449689_n.jpg" width="452" /></a></div><br />This then was Ombudsmen's third gig in the capital and their biggest yet. A birthday gig for Christopher Plummer, the audience travelled for the occasion (many braving the current vagaries of our public transport system to make it up to North London). Ombudsmen were second on after 'College Boy Haircut'. The sound on the night was good, the band having enjoyed a soundcheck, a luxury that they have not enjoyed at some of their gigs to the detriment of some shows.<p></p><p>The set was essentially a run through of the material on their two E.P.s, 'Fizzy Milk' and 'Terms & Conditions Apply' (both are on Spotify). John, the bass player assured me that new material is being worked up and will appear on a further E.P. release before too long. </p><p>Before the gig Mo told me that she was very nervous, said in slightly earthier terms I may add. This was by far the biggest audience that the band have played to to date, by my reckoning 150 people or so. Once on stage though there were few signs of nerves although that can be difficult to tell as the singer stands stock still throughout... only movement of the eyes and mouth confirm an existence of vital signs!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Br89bNVGoxLs8uX308x6ulOXCApPwuRWyJ57ljui5smm3y4PGHbfdfZr9CpLbs7noycDckLV7ClSYnoy09iCgVd4fV-XHB-Yu47udKR8SLa80l6ZH_MDQrAGBCnvOsH3YXYhApwuU6z386qmUTqAA2j5W4BSG5MgK_RMggWdNMqsVrftheg9bUw1KBiD/s960/424611178_7601560433211913_134897869200027978_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="682" data-original-width="960" height="284" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Br89bNVGoxLs8uX308x6ulOXCApPwuRWyJ57ljui5smm3y4PGHbfdfZr9CpLbs7noycDckLV7ClSYnoy09iCgVd4fV-XHB-Yu47udKR8SLa80l6ZH_MDQrAGBCnvOsH3YXYhApwuU6z386qmUTqAA2j5W4BSG5MgK_RMggWdNMqsVrftheg9bUw1KBiD/w400-h284/424611178_7601560433211913_134897869200027978_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Mo Andrews and John Bardsley (Ombudsmen)</div><div style="text-align: center;">The Lexington London</div><div style="text-align: center;">18th February 2024.</div><div style="text-align: center;">(Photo: Paul Jenner)</div><div><p>With this larger audience, I took some moments to look around me. I am of an awkward age. Too young for punk in its prime, I saw those bands either late in the day or at the point that their initial animosities had sufficiently abated to allow them one again to share the same stage. In between there was a musical vacuum in the UK. Just horrible.</p><p>That changed a bit in 1994/95 with the appearance of a number of young bands that put guitar, drum and bass at the forefront of their material once more. The music press ever keen to pigeonhole a scene labelled these bands Britpop and the rest is history.</p><p>For my part there was one band that got my pulse racing and that was Elastica. I loved them, the sheer neck of the band! Listen to most bands and you can recognise their influences. With Elastica, it was possible to take that to the next level... influence per song. But no matter, they were just brilliant. They had it all, the look, the sound and the attitude. 'Martens and leggings' in Owen's words!</p><p>In some ways, Britpop was the next 'punk' revolution... like its older '77 cousin, it was intense, much hyped in the press and very short lived. And yet, as was the case with punk, most of the bands involved are viewed 30 years on with great affection.</p><p>The eagle eyed amongst you may well spot an honorary Wingman.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpKxJaVlThJl7GCg-sNKUTXLuAhYsoN2xvmUdltLoE52zUTknzp04LXPtAVOWzfshgeD8GAfD8-XR-TW-y-lSXx4T_xrq1QtqhKnL3siBUMLIhy-tXQYFR4nHS-rv6hwWWwlQuf6HQ9F00K9XLzRg5VLxWJMYB8TKw35xfWf5hXJFKP2UJD7NlUtqVo3K7/s855/britpop%20fr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="855" data-original-width="855" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpKxJaVlThJl7GCg-sNKUTXLuAhYsoN2xvmUdltLoE52zUTknzp04LXPtAVOWzfshgeD8GAfD8-XR-TW-y-lSXx4T_xrq1QtqhKnL3siBUMLIhy-tXQYFR4nHS-rv6hwWWwlQuf6HQ9F00K9XLzRg5VLxWJMYB8TKw35xfWf5hXJFKP2UJD7NlUtqVo3K7/w400-h400/britpop%20fr.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>DVD Image: <a href="https://we.tl/t-AQCc8kTcdh">https://we.tl/t-AQCc8kTcdh</a></p><p>Artwork: <a href="https://we.tl/t-RSl9wsEok5">https://we.tl/t-RSl9wsEok5</a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5VCy9q3INmX7HNm31fBdkUko-S3Wea7iEx5fJSFZXFHRseAe0Fd7Yk_3lA-l_F7NyGZdq4AGC1ZkAaqoKGQ7hgr94xfIH3hLWQhVzm09mqjEEsvpVVo2XUZx5ryMBWnk3VLbTAQPFkiZchDjEq3FnNSD53HhVKxlYtqSXhHAaXzBAL1PNlYoAvZO2iYAN/s709/britpop%20bk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="709" data-original-width="709" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5VCy9q3INmX7HNm31fBdkUko-S3Wea7iEx5fJSFZXFHRseAe0Fd7Yk_3lA-l_F7NyGZdq4AGC1ZkAaqoKGQ7hgr94xfIH3hLWQhVzm09mqjEEsvpVVo2XUZx5ryMBWnk3VLbTAQPFkiZchDjEq3FnNSD53HhVKxlYtqSXhHAaXzBAL1PNlYoAvZO2iYAN/w400-h400/britpop%20bk.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Musky03http://www.blogger.com/profile/14139009587198270829noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-333056491858240180.post-31950358108404714122024-02-17T12:41:00.004+00:002024-02-17T12:41:30.619+00:00Edinburgh Playhouse 17th February 1985<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij3SpWTpLLN_2hi_koph2aP6tjubdFo0baEp6asSKnoMVQErb1zWMj4qk3vAqy78sulsgbJPA0DbNGp5dz_xosN6MNb_cuklE8-yP8P0fDhzHG4SZRwvyFQA71Q5YWL-XfrMmB1GRVEnowyWAlxhs3pdmQ2UTapwqp1Qmn3OUyOiLL0zm0fR_NNxqLtaVC/s1220/FR%20copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1220" data-original-width="1202" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij3SpWTpLLN_2hi_koph2aP6tjubdFo0baEp6asSKnoMVQErb1zWMj4qk3vAqy78sulsgbJPA0DbNGp5dz_xosN6MNb_cuklE8-yP8P0fDhzHG4SZRwvyFQA71Q5YWL-XfrMmB1GRVEnowyWAlxhs3pdmQ2UTapwqp1Qmn3OUyOiLL0zm0fR_NNxqLtaVC/w394-h400/FR%20copy.jpg" width="394" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Another anniversary gig from the Aural Sculpture marathon some 39 years ago.
